ST had a wonderfully heartwarming story about Mr Ang Thiam Hock. The story began about 10 years ago when Thiam Hock started playing soccer with his son at the street soccer court near his house. That was how he got to know children from underprivileged and dysfunctional families. A chance conversation with the MP of the area, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam led to him taking up community work.
With the MP’s support, Thiam Hock brought a team together to start a cosy corner for children from underprivileged backgrounds to study and get help for their schoolwork. Thiam Hock and his team also organised various activities to help the children with their self-esteem and develop their critical thinking skills.
I am very proud and honoured to call Thiam Hock a friend. Thiam Hock may not be rich materially, but his life of working his way up and giving back to the society is such an inspiration. I hope more people will be inspired to follow his example of contributing to the community and helping people who are less privileged rather than go chasing after material wealth and flaunting their riches. If more people in Singapore were as gracious, as kind, as big-hearted and willing to serve altruistically as Thiam Hock, Singapore would truly be a warm and loving home.
