Hidden in the Lorong 1 Toa Payoh Market is a very strange stall. The signage says Bliss Haven Restaurant and shows images of food in some claypots. But that is a lie. The stall actually sells muffins. Uggli Muffins.
You can’t miss it. Just follow your nose. The aroma of freshly baked muffins is oh so tantalising. It’s a very simple stall. Clean. Tidy. With two people working inside baking the muffins and an uncle taking and filling orders.
The uncle taking and filling orders is quite funny. I wanted to just buy one muffin (on a diet…). He thought I was a first time customer and wanted to give me one free. I replied that he had actually given me a free sample a couple of months back already. So I insisted on paying. To my surprise, he gave me two muffins instead! Told me that it’s a reward for my honesty!
I don’t know how they make money. At $1 a muffin, I think it’s quite cheap already. And the uncle seems to like finding excuses to give muffins away for free. Buy 10, get 2 free. And I think there are a few other types of offers.
What about the muffins? Well… they live up to their name. They certainly don’t look good. Not like the fanciful baked products that people spam on Instagram these days.
This was what I actually ordered. Doesn’t look that terribly appetising. No special flourishes. But the taste. Oh man. The top layer is baked to slight crunchiness. But the inside is still fluffy and light. The sweetness is balanced by the slight bitterness of the chocolate. Really yummy!
And this is what I got for free. No idea what it is…
It had some nuts and cranberries. The top was also slightly crunchy and inside light and fluffy. The nuts and cranberries gave it some additional texture.
Uggli Muffins. Don’t look good, but they certainly tasted great. It was a very delightful end to a meal.
