“Violent” verses in Quran put in context

Are there verses in the Quran that are violent? Yes. There are. Does that mean that Islam is a religion of violence? That is what a lot of people believe. They are wrong. Because those verses need to be read in context of the history and culture of the early days of Islam. Here are some examples:

This is, I am sure, not exhaustive. I suggest that before we say that Islam is a violent religion, let’s go and learn about it. Read more about it. Study it. Find out why certain things are said. Learn about how it evolved into what it is today. A good place to start is with Reza Azlan’s “No God But God“.
